Universal Background Checks and similar infringements.

Dr. Coburn, I know that many do not care about or pay much attention to the Constitution or our OKGOP platform.

In most cases you are an exception to that problem.

I understand that you are no longer working with Senator Schumer and others on the issue but for future reference in considering support for Universal Background checks please consider the following.

From the Constitution:
2nd Amendment, “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”

Please focus on the “shall not be infringed”. And then there is our 4th Amendment which seems to speak clearly to the idea of universal searches

4th Amendment, “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.”

From our State Platform: 2. We support the Second Amendment of the United States citizens to keep and bear arms; therefore, we oppose any attempts, whether by law or regulation at any level of
government, to restrict any law-abiding citizen’s right to keep and bear arms, restrict access to ammunition, or record the purchase thereof. We also oppose any federal taxation on firearms or ammunition.

I understand the desire to try and keep people safe and will not fault you for having such a desire. The Universal Background checks however betray the Constitution and position of the Party to which you belong. I hope and pray that you will stand against such in the future.
