On Healthcare Mandates

Gingrich now seems to oppose individual mandates that for years previously he supported.

Newsmax Article about Healthcare Mandates

“I am for people, individuals — exactly like automobile insurance — individuals having health insurance and being required to have health insurance. And I am prepared to vote for a voucher system which will give individuals, on a sliding scale, a government subsidy so we insure that everyone as individuals have health insurance.”

And…

“I agree that all of us have a responsibility to pay–help pay for health care,” Gingrich said, adding, “I’ve said consistently we ought to have some requirement that you either have health insurance or you post a bond …”

And…

Gingrich told NBC’s David Gregory. “I believe all of us–and this is going to be a big debate–I believe all of us have a responsibility to help pay for healthcare …”

Newt Gingrich in his 2008 book, Real Change:

“Finally, we should insist that everyone above a certain level buy coverage (or, if they are opposed to insurance, post a bond). Meanwhile, we should provide tax credits or subsidize private insurance for the poor.”

From his 2005 book, Winning the Future:

“You have the right to be part of the lowest-cost insurance pool and you have a responsibility to buy insurance… We need some significant changes to ensure that every American is insured, but we should make it clear that a 21st Century Intelligent System requires everyone to participate in the insurance system.”
